Here I come to Lamu island of Kenya, very close to Somalia. Even though Lamu and Nairobi are part of Kenya, they are so different in that it has very strong Muslim culture here whereas Chrisitianity takes up a larger percentage of population in Nairobi.
ケニアのラム島という、ソマリア近くの島にやってきました！ケニアの沿岸部はイスラム教の影響が色濃く残っており、同じ国でありながらも大都会ナイロビとは全く雰囲気が異なります。

I usually don’t see people with different backgrounds with stereotype, but I must say I really respect European people’s attitude/midset towards donation. One time I had a chance to talk to Dutch person about the restaurant she often goes to, and I asked why she goes to the place. Her answer was because she used to love the place and wanted to support their business after their reopening. When I heard her answer, I thought there are not many people who go to a restaurant with a mindset like she has. Visiting a restaurant and paying for them is not just an exchange of service/foods and money, but it is “supporting the business in the most direct and effective way”. This woman has found another value in money, not just paying/receiving/donating and was using it in different level.
There is a thing called “free event”. Apparently someone is paying for an event to make it free for others. Also when it’s free, people don’t need to have responsibility to make an event successful. Making something “free” means a lot in various ways. It’s not an example of something being “free”, but there is a massage place in Thailand where you can have one hour service for about $3. I still cannot forget one time I was having a massage, and one Japanese man came in and said “wow this room is so dirty”. In my opinion, the room was not the level of dirtiness that should be described as dirty, and I also wondered how this man could expect the high cleanliness and service level with only $3. As I mentioned above, what you could expect from this massage place is basic massage that worths $3. That’s what a price means.
I don’t know how to summarize this whole bunch of stories of different aspects. But I surely feel like there is some essence that we could learn from these experiences.
基本、特定の国の人を変に敬ったり見下したりすることはないが、チップ文化やキリスト教の考え方から来るのか、欧米人の寄付文化（精神）は素直にあっぱれである。あるオランダ人とレストランについて話していた時に、なぜそこのレストランに行くのか？と尋ねると、「昔から好きで最近リニューアルしたばかりで人が少ないから応援したいと思って」という答えだった。この答えを聞いた時、この意識でお店に行ける人がどれくらいいるだろうか、と思った。レストランに行ってお金を払う、ということはただ「食べたものの対価をお金で払う」ということだけではなく、「そのビジネスを直接的かつ最適な形で応援すること」でもある。その方は、お金を「受け取る、使う、寄付する」等の一般的な使い方とは別次元で使い、お金に違う価値を与えていると思った。
話が逸れるが、世の中には無料のイベントやものというものがある。無料であるということは、無料にするために誰かしらが負担しているのである。更に、無料であるということは、そこに責任は発生しなくても良い。無料であるということは色々な意味を持つ。無料の例ではないが、タイに100バーツのマッサージ屋さんがあり、1時間マッサージをしてもらって日本円にして300円程度の激安サービスがある。そこで小生がマッサージを受けていると、他の日本人客がそのマッサージルームを見て「汚ねっ」と日本語で言ったのは今でも忘れられない。間違いなく汚いというクオリティーではなかったし、100バーツのマッサージにどんなクオリティーを期待しているのだろうかと思った。100バーツのマッサージ屋さんに、基本的なマッサージをすること以外の責任と必要性はない。
纏まりなく体験談を挙げてみたが、どう締めくくったらいいかわからない・・でもこの事例には何か大事なことが潜んでいるように思う。
