If bored of traveling, get lost 旅に飽きたら、迷子になろう

 Among people who showed up for my party, some passionate Nepalis came to my workshop this time! One of my students seemed very happy about my workshop and he gave me a paragliding experience, one of the most popular activities in Poker Nepal, as a gift. So amazed to get such a nice gift! Huge thanks to J’s Japanese cooking studio for supporting me in making our event successful under difficult conditions in Nepal. (In Kathmandu, there are regular power cuts, not sufficient ingredients for udon making, and Hindu food rules…

（前回のパーティーに参加したの中で、さらにうどん作りに興味がある有志の方がWSに参加してくれました！とても喜んでくださったようで、ネパール・ポカラのアトラクションで有名なパラグライディング体験をプレゼントしてもらってしまいました・・・感激！定期的な停電、これまでの訪問国の中でダンドツで揃わない材料、ヒンドゥー教の規律、とうどん作りをする上でハードな環境なネパールですが、J’s Japanese cooking studioさんと参加者の皆さんのおかげで素晴らしい会になりました。ありがとうございました！）

Traveling nowadays has become boring. To be more precise, it has become difficult to enjoy traveling. Obviously, smartphones and low cost airlines have made our life much easier to get out of our home, but Google map made our life too easy to know where we are, which restaurant are highly rated, and where we should go to. There is no need to ask anyone for help. Even in the Himalaya range without reception, which is where I am now, I can know easily where I am located using offline map app.

I started walking with my smartphone turned off as an easy experiment. People asked me where I am heading to, but my answer was always “this direction”. Only knowing that I am walking down the hill, I was totally lost. I was very hungry so started looking for a place to eat. There was a Nepali lady with very nice smile on her face so I instantly decided to have a lunch there. As I finished having Nepali daily food Dal baht, her kids came to me so we started playing in the mountain. When it started becoming dark, they said “why not sleep at our house?” so I decided to sleep here, which has become the most wonderful experience out of all the experiences during Himalaya trekking.

It is so boring when your day is so precisely planned out that we know what’s going to happen. Unexpected drama makes our travel more exciting. We need to get lost. Turn off a smartphone, and we have to push ourself to an area where we become completely in trouble needing help. And ask someone around us for help with smile. Then our dry and tasteless digital days would become more realistic with a full of warm human communication.

旅がつまらなくなった。正確には、旅を楽しむのが難しい時代になった。スマホやLCCの登場により旅がしやすくなったかと思えば、便利ではあるが、コミュニケーションがデジタル化され、リアルな人との関わりが減った。グーグルマップさえあれば、道も美味しいレストランもおすすめ観光地もわかってしまうので、誰にも聞く必要がない。今いるヒマラヤの山中のオフライン状況下でさえ、アプリで自分の位置が地図上でわかる。

山中、あえてスマホを見ずに適当に歩いてみた。「どこ行くの？」と聞かれても「あっちの方」とかそんなノリである。山を下っている、という情報しかない迷子状態の中で、お腹が空いたなーと思い歩いていると、ナイススマイルなネパール人女性がいるレストランが現れたので、直感的に、ここで食べよう！と思った。ネパールのソールフード、ダルバートを頬張っていると、ネパールレディーの子供達が現れたので、一緒に遊んでいると、今日はここに泊まっていけ！と言われ、泊まることに。ヒマラヤトレッキングで一番の思い出となった。

未来が分かりきった旅は超絶つまらない。想定外の体験が、何よりも旅を充実させると思う。思い切って、迷子になる必要がある。スマホを手放し、世界の果てで一人足らず知り合いもいない中、絶望的に困り、ヒヤヒヤする必要がある。そして、にこやかに「困ってます」と誰かに助けを乞う。それだけで日々は乾いたデジタルなものでなく、潤いのあるリアルな出会いに満ち溢れるようになる。
